In Mafia 3 the player controls Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran. After returning from the war, he joined Black Mafia, a group which later wiped out by treacherous Mob. Out for revenge now, Clay must defeat his enemies to get a revenge and regain control in the surrounding districts.
One of the biggest improvements in the game is the massive stretch of land designed for exploration. The story takes place in fictionalized New Bordeaux on New Orleans in 1968. In total there are ten exclusive districts, such as Bayou (a forested area), Frisco Field (mansions and parks area), French Ward (party districts) and Bourbon Street. Additionally, the games offers also a rare variety of buildings character. The player may explore dilapidated churches, backwater bootlegger sheds and a steamboat, all of them considered to be a great technical achievement.
Only one thing disappoints in the game – it is the lack of creativity in the usage of weapons. The player is not offered an option to upgrade and customize the found weapons. What’s more, the elements of the world around cannot be used to protect and defend the player from attacks, even though it is becoming more and more popular in other games of this type. Still, the indispensable elements of violence are present in the game in even greater level than it was in the predecessors.
However, the game provides the player with an realistic and fantastic gaming atmosphere, thanks to the atmospheric lighting, dirty streets and colorful neon lights, which adds to a feeling of the place being alive.
